A Case for Civic Eduation
“One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.”
-Plato
Many people become frustrated and disillusioned with government and the political process. It moves slowly, seemingly nothing is ever accomplished beside the endless bickering between the two sides of the aisle. As citizens we have the opportunity to change this. As Plato said, you have to be involved in the process or else submit yourself to the sub-par decisions of others.
The means by which we can change this process is through civic education. We must teach our students that “Politics is a Good Thing” and provide them with the tools and confidence to enact positive political change throughout the country. It’s not about going to Washington DC and standing on the steps of the Capitol, though it may be useful. It’s about cleaning up our communities, making them safe places to live and providing everyone with a chance and an opportunity to live the proverbial “American Dream.”
