Lesson #11: Attend a Government Meeting

Purpose:

Students increase their understanding of the political process by experiencing it first-hand as they shadow a government leader for a day or attend a government meeting.

Central Questions:

  1. What are the responsibilities of political leaders?
  2. How does my local government work?
  3. What current needs are priorities for my community?
  4. How does my target issue relate to community priorities?

Warm-up Activity:

Ask students to explain how they learned to ride a bike.

  • Where were you when you learned to ride a bike?
  • What helped you learn to stay on the bike?
  • Did you enjoy riding the bike? If yes, why?
  • Are there strategies used when learning to ride a bike that can be applied to learning about the political process and staying involved in it? If yes, what are they?
